Just In: Breakout Receiver May Be Released Imminently

Rashee Rice, a breakout receiver and current Kansas City Chiefs wideout, could be released soon this offseason.

Rashee Rice, a breakout receiver who currently plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, could be released this offseason. Rice is a suspect in an alleged assault that injured a guy inside a Dallas nightclub, according to the Dallas Morning News. It’s the latest offseason setback for the SMU product, who has emerged as a key receiver for the Super Bowl champions. This follows his arrest in March for his involvement in a six-car incident in Dallas that injured at least seven people.

The former second-round pick is already facing many charges from the automobile accident, so it appears that this latest event will be enough for the Chiefs to move on. As of this writing, Rice’s attorney and the Chiefs had no reaction. Rice is already facing a multi-game suspension, so the problems are only worsening. It appears that the Chiefs made the correct decision to select Xavier Worthy from Texas in this year’s selection to be his potential replacement.

However, the Chiefs are being patient with the SMU product, which could eventually wear out. It appears that if the NFL decides to suspend him for one season, he might be released. Head Coach Andy Reid stated that he is letting law police handle the problem and that they will reconvene to determine his future with the team. However, one wonders how long it will take until the squad decides to play the waiting game.

It looked like the Chiefs would be without a receiver this season. The squad was also able to sign Marquise Brown on a one-year contract to provide veteran support. It appears that opinions and talking heads urging the Chiefs to cut Rice may arrive sooner than anticipated.

The Release May Come Soon

The consequence for his release is not comparable to what he faces in real life. Rice could face jail time, therefore it’s hard to see the Chiefs moving on from him. He has the right to defend his behavior, but the situation does not appear to be in his favor. It raises the question of whether his on-field brilliance can hide the number of off-field concerns he’s been dealing with this offseason.

The Chiefs are already investing heavily on the SMU product, especially after a breakout rookie season. During his first season, he had 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns, and he added more yards in the playoffs this year. Without his efforts, Kansas City’s chances of winning a second consecutive Super Bowl were slim. It’s why the team drafted the SMU product with the second pick last year, seeing potential in him.

However, Worthy will most likely need a year to adjust to the NFL environment, but they do have Marquise Brown. Patrick Mahomes has other weapons at his disposal, like Travis Kelce and Kadarius Toney. The Chiefs may require one more veteran player to be a consistent weapon as Worthy adjusts and can work alongside Brown. Here are five late-game wide receivers the Chiefs may add.

Possible Wide Receivers Free Agents

Tyler Boyd was rumored to join the team, but he only inked a contract with the Titans this week. Odell Beckham Jr. signed with the Miami Dolphins, leaving the receiver market barren. However, players such as Michael Thomas and Zay Jones are still available. It is not a critical necessity for the Chiefs, but a serious injury could devastate the receiver corps.

The team won’t be able to afford a trade for Tee Higgins, Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel so a cheap signing would be logical.
