John Eustace signing’s future uncertain at Birmingham City – Opinion

Birmingham City signed 12 players in the summer transfer window, hoping to finally avoid finishing near the bottom of the table.

John Eustace was in charge at the start of the season, when the Blues had one of the most active transfer windows of any team in the second tier.

He was fired once the club was taken over, despite being in sixth place at the time, and replaced by Wayne Rooney.

But the England legend was fired after winning only two of his 15 games in command.

Former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray has taken over, looking to steady the ship after a steep descent to the bottom of the table under Rooney.

While Jay Stansfield, Cody Drameh, and Krystian Bielik have all been successful thus far, others have fallen short of expectations.

One of them has been Keshi Anderson.

Anderson looked a useful signing

After beginning his senior career with non-league club Barton Rovers, the winger signed professionally for Crystal Palace in 2015, impressing with a six-minute hat-trick against them while on trial at Brentford.

He then spent the following few seasons on loan in League One with Doncaster Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, and Northampton Town before joining Swindon Town on loan for the first part of the 2017/18 season.

After an excellent start, he joined permanently in January 2018 and went on to win League Two with the Robins in 2019/20 under Richie Wellens. However, at the end of the season, he turned down a new deal to join Blackpool instead.

Anderson’s transfer to Blackpool would ultimately be where he demonstrated his abilities in League One and the Championship. In his first season with the club, they were promoted to the second flight via the play-offs.

After spending the next two seasons in the Championship with the Tangerines, he left at the end of last season. After impressing on trial, he would join Birmingham on a one-year contract with an option for another year.

His start at St Andrew’s made him look like a success. He would start Birmingham’s first eight league games, and the team appeared to be near the top of the standings. Eustace even referred to him as’magnificent’ following his impressive start.

Anderson has fallen out of favour under Mowbray

Unfortunately for the 28-year-old, he was pulled off in a game against Queens Park Rangers in September due to injury, which would sideline him for three months.

Under Rooney and now Mowbray, he has battled for playing time. Since his return on Boxing Day, he has only played 78 minutes of championship football.

With Ryo Miyoshi and Siriki Dembele impressing on the wings in recent weeks, Anderson’s future looks gloomy.

Anderson demonstrated at the beginning of the season that he has the potential to make a significant contribution to the Championship.

Unfortunately for him, Birmingham is unlikely to extend his contract at the end of the season.
