Jim Montgomery Reaction For Brad Marchand’s Development As…

Marchand was named the 27th captain in franchise history

After the season ended, Brad Marchand took time to reflect on his first season as the Bruins’ 27th captain.

Marchand scored 29 goals during the regular season while learning how to lead from the front under previous leaders Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron. That advancement should be even more vital for the Bruins next season.

“What excites me about the potential of next year is the growth and experience that our captain Brad Marchand will have,” Boston head coach Jim Montgomery told reporters at the Bruins’ season-ending press conference on Wednesday at TD Garden. “As captain, he made it his squad. I believe that having the entire summer to develop ties with his core leaders will only help us improve.”

The Boston captain has one year left on his deal. Given his reputation and worth to the Bruins, the front staff expects Marchand to conclude his career in the Black and Gold.

“We’re gonna get to Brad,” Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said at the press conference. “… He will eventually prolong his stay here to become, in my perspective, a lifetime Bruin, since it is what he should do. “We will check that box.”

The Bruins will follow Marchand into next season, as the remaining Stanley Cup champion attempts to lead Boston to a deeper playoff run.
