Jim Harbaugh gives an insane assessment regarding J.J. McCarthy

In the lead-up to the NFL Draft, Jim Harbaugh is making every effort to improve his former quarterback’s standing.

Harbaugh appeared on FS1’s “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” on Friday and covered a wide range of issues. We asked the new coach of the Los Angeles Chargers what he believed NFL teams should think about Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy. In response, Harbaugh made an extraordinarily audacious forecast.

Harbaugh thinks McCarthy will have persuaded NFL teams that the quarterback deserves to be the first pick in the draft by the time the draft rolls around.

“(He brings) arm talent, athleticism, it factor, winning with numbing repetition,” Harbaugh said. “Don’t be surprised if — when — he’s the No. 1 quarterback off the board. That’s my prediction right now. When people get a load of JJ and how he can throw the ball, how he spins it, his athleticism, his intelligence, the it factor, the competitiveness that he has and they get around him and they really start digging in and they start talking to him … that’s an early prediction for the 2024 NFL Draft.”

McCarthy’s play in leading Michigan to a national championship propelled him into the mid-to-late first round of most mock drafts. He is expected to be selected as the fourth or fifth quarterback overall, behind Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, and Drake Maye, according to the majority of commentators. Although we don’t think things will change in the next two months, you have to give Harbaugh credit for trying to stand up for his player.

This season, McCarthy has completed an incredible 72.3% of his throws for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. He added 202 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. He led the team admirably throughout a year full of distractions and played in a pro-style offense, which should help.
