Jay Stansfield reviews Birmingham City’s goal jubilation with a pointed statement

Jay Stansfield’s joy after scoring the game-winning goal for Birmingham City against Preston North End drowned out the crowd.

Stansfield, the Blues’ leading scorer, scored the 11th goal of his prolific loan stay from Fulham to secure a 1-0 victory over the Lilywhites. Stansfield snapped a five-game goal drought and made amends for a missed opportunity in the Blues’ loss to Queens Park Rangers on Friday.

The 21-year-old celebrated his goal against Preston by placing his fingers to his ears in front of The Tilton. Stansfield explained why, saying, “You get some strange fans here and there, at every team.

“As you can see from my celebration today, I haven’t been questioned in the last few weeks, but things haven’t been going my way, and I’ve missed and seized opportunities that I should have converted.

“I take full responsibility but my celebration today was just to keep those negative thoughts out and focus on myself and, when a chance like that comes, make sure I put it in the back of the net.”

Blues are now 20th in the Championship table with six games remaining, having scored 42 points. Stansfield wants the Blues to build on it and alleviate fears of relegation to League One.

He said, “The last few weeks have been difficult, not only for me, but for the entire squad. It’s a huge three points on such a good day with a large crowd.

“We have got to stick together as a team. The results haven’t been good for us in the last couple of weeks but a new manager has come in and set the tone on what he wants and all the players are buying into it. We have six games left, and we need to score as many points as possible in those six games.”
