Jay Stansfield replies to Birmingham City boo boys ahead of relegation decider

Fulham loanee Jay Stansfield, Birmingham City’s top scorer this season, took exception to chants from the away end at Huddersfield.

Jay Stansfield has apologised for how he reacted to chants from the Birmingham City end during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town. Blues squandered a fantastic opportunity to put themselves in a strong position heading into the final day of the season as they strive to avoid relegation.

Koji Miyoshi put the Blues ahead at halftime, but the Terriers, who were all but eliminated after failing to win on Saturday, rallied quickly at the start of the second period through Rhys Healey. Blues now have no alternative but to defeat Norwich City on the final day, at St Andrew’s next Saturday, and hope that other outcomes involving survival rivals favor them.

Blues fans, who filled the away end at the John Smith’s Stadium, chanted ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at members of the squad as they walked over to greet the crowd at full time. Stansfield was clearly perplexed by the chanting and responded accordingly before being led away by Lukas Jutkiewicz.

On Sunday morning, Fulham loanee Stansfield, who is the club’s top goalscorer with 13 this season and is widely regarded as one of the Blues’ best performers in what has otherwise been another turbulent year, apologised for his actions and delivered a rallying cry ahead of the Norwich game, which will be the final game of his otherwise fruitful loan spell.

“Yesterday was a tough one to take, and I apologize to all Blues fans for how I acted after the game,” Stansfield wrote on Instagram. “The fans have been great all season. We have a big game on Saturday, therefore we all need to stick together. @bcfc.”
