Jameson Williams creates Alabama NFL record with touchdown run for Lions

Jameson Williams, a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, has five touchdowns in his NFL career.

The last two have landed on the ground.

In the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers, the former Alabama All-American scored a 42-yard end-around run to give the Lions a 7-0 lead with 13:18 remaining in the first quarter.

The play resulted in the postseason’s longest touchdown run by a former Alabama player. Williams’ touchdown run exceeded Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry’s 35-yard run in a 22-21 win over Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC playoffs on January 6, 2018.

Only two wide receivers have run longer touchdowns in NFL playoff games. In divisional-round games, James Lofton ran 71 yards for the Green Bay Packers against the Dallas Cowboys on Jan. 16, 1983, while Ahmad Merritt rushed 47 yards for the Chicago Bears against the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 19, 2002.

Williams’ final score of the 2023 regular season occurred on a similar play, going for 19 yards in a 33-28 win over the New Orleans Saints on December 3.
