Jack Tuttle provides Michigan football a different choice at quarterback

Michigan football has just learned of another quarterback who will be eligible to compete this spring.

Michigan football fans were wondering if the Wolverines will add another quarterback this spring, but on Saturday, Jack Tuttle revealed that he will return for another season.

Tuttle transferred to Michigan football before the 2023 season, following a four-year stint at Indiana. On Saturday, the 6-foot-4, 212-pound quarterback announced on X that he has been awarded a seventh contract, indicating his potential return for another season.

The former four-star recruit has attempted 199 passes in his career. He has thrown five touchdowns and six interceptions. Tuttle was one of Michigan football’s backup quarterbacks last season and performed admirably in limited time, completing 15-of-17 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown.

Tuttle has completed 59.8 percent of his passes in his career, but he has never lived up to the expectations of his recruiting ranking. Nonetheless, he was efficient in limited snaps last season, and it may be worth investigating whether he can be a Cade McNamara type for the Wolverines.

Their recruiting rankings are relatively comparable. Tuttle would have to compete against Alex Orji, Jayden Denegal, and Davis Warren. That will not be simple, but Michigan football may be able to deploy a combination of quarterbacks.

It would be fantastic if a starting-caliber talent emerged from the transfer portal, such as freshman quarterback signee Jadyn Davis. However, if the quarterback is already on the roster, Tuttle’s return will be beneficial anyway. He’s a veteran who understands the offense and won’t require a lot of reps. He can also help the younger quarterbacks and has indicated interest in coaching.

Should I expect him to start next season? No, but there is a remote probability. Tuttle’s return, regardless of his role, has strengthened the quarterback room.
