Roy Keane suggested Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels should be fined one week’s salary for a ‘terrible’ blunder in his team’s Premier League game against Brighton.

Forest have begun the season strongly after surviving a relegation struggle last season, picking up eight points from their opening four games and defeating Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team continued their outstanding form by taking an early lead against Brighton on Sunday, with Chris Wood converting from the penalty spot after Callum Hudson-Odoi was fouled in the box.

Brighton came racing back to lead 2-1 before the break, but Jack Hinshelwood’s stunning header leveled the game before Danny Welbeck’s brilliant free-kick on the stroke of halftime.

Instead of aiming to bring the ball up and down over the Forest wall, Welbeck targeted goalkeeper Sels’ side of the net and beat the Belgian with a powerful, curling shot.

It was praised as a ‘wonderful’ strike, but Manchester United veteran Roy Keane lambasted Sels’ role in the goal, claiming it was a mistake that should result in a fine for the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper.

“The goalkeeper should be fined a week’s wages for that,” Keane said Sky Sports at halftime. You can’t be beaten on that side.

‘I’d punish him a week’s wages since it’s so poor. He’s taken a bet by tilting to the right. You cannot be defeated on that side.

‘Danny [Welbeck] is a good player; he clearly enjoyed it. He is continuously influencing games. However, the goalkeeper’s performance is not satisfactory.

Reacting to Welbeck’s goal, ex-Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock stated on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Wow!” Danny Welbeck isn’t known for his free-kick abilities, but my word.

‘Wonderful technique. Welbeck pushes it past the right post and brings it back in. The people in front of me are gasping!

‘Hinshelwood ducks underneath it, and I’m not sure what Matz Sels is doing; he has no reason not to be on that side.

Micah Richards, a former Manchester City player, praised Welbeck’s performance on Sky Sports, saying, “Look at the pace, whip, and bend…”

‘I wasn’t expecting him to whip it there; I thought he was going over the wall, but what a hit.’
