‘It’s not enough’: Following West Ham’s heartbreaking late defeat, ex-Claret makes a damaging remark about Burnley

Burnley’s agonizing late defeat to West Ham, according to leading commentator Ian Wright, was self-inflicted.

On Saturday, the Clarets appeared to be on their way to their first home win of the season, leading 1-0 due to Jay Rodriguez’s penalty.

The Hammers responded in dramatic fashion late on, leveling through Dara O’Shea’s own goal four minutes from time before claiming all three points in stoppage time thanks to Tomas Soucek.

On Match of the Day, presenter Gary Lineker attempted to put a positive spin on Burnley’s performance, arguing that Vincent Kompany’s side are at least coming closer, having come four minutes away from claiming that long-awaited first win at Turf Moor.

“You could say they’re getting closer and he’s [Kompany] saying he’s not going to have a go at his players, but what you’ve got to understand with the Premier League is that 70 minutes, 80 minutes, it’s not enough,” Wright, a former Claret, said.

“When you look at the goals they gave up, the margins in this league mean you have to get across, and you can’t afford to let the ball go into someone like [Mohammed] Kudus.”

“Even with four players surrounding him, there wasn’t enough to try to take the ball away from him.” He eventually succeeds and they do not stop him.

“It’s the margins again for the second goal.” When there is way too much room, you get punished in this league. The participants must leave as soon as possible. You simply cannot afford to do so.
