Ipswich Town will host Wardley in a ‘huge’ heavyweight match

Fabio Wardley could be going to Ipswich Town for a hometown fight as the club grants green light for boxing event.

“We’ve always been open to him fighting at Portman Road in his hometown in front of what will be a huge crowd,” Ipswich Town CEO Mark Ashton gives green light for heavyweight Fabio Wardley to fight in stadium.

Fabio Wardley could return to Ipswich Town for a local fight after the club announced plans to host a heavyweight title bout in front of a “huge crowd”.

Wardley defended his British and Commonwealth crowns in a thrilling draw against Frazer Clarke at The O2 on March 31.

The Suffolk-based champion is a die-hard Ipswich Town fan, routinely attending home and away games, and the club’s CEO, Mark Ashton, has embraced the thought of Wardley fighting at Portman Road.

“We’re extremely proud of Fabio for his accomplishments over the last few years,” Ashton told Sky Sports.

“We’ve always been open to him competing on Portman Road in his hometown in front of a large audience.

“Of course, the timing has to be good for both the club and Fabio, but Portman Road will be waiting.

“We’d love it to be this year.”

Wardley is now pondering his next career step and is open to a rematch versus Clarke.

“It’s a likely option,” Wardley told Sky Sports. “It is not the only option, but it is a plausible one.

“I’m still champion, and I still have my belts. I’m still ranked highly by the governing authorities for global titles.

“Or if the people want it [Clarke rematch], and it becomes popular enough, we can bring it back.

“Whoever I fight there, it would be a dream come true for me to fight at Portman Road in front of over 30,000 people.”

Ipswich are competing with Leicester City and Leeds United for automatic promotion and may have won Premier League status by the time Wardley fights at the football stadium.

“That top three battle is just crazy,” Wardley remarked. “Everyone disagrees on a few points.

“It’s a wild ride to watch and obviously I have a really close relationship with the club, so it’s fantastic to be there and watch the boys succeed and do so well.”
