Ipswich Town Set For Reunion With Former Midfielder

Former Blues midfielder Flynn Downes is thought to be on Town’s list of prospective summer signings.

Downes, 25, spent last season on loan at Southampton from West Ham, and the Saints want to bring him back to St Mary’s permanently.

According to The Sun, the two clubs have yet to reach an agreement on a cost, with the Hammers seeking £15 million before add-ons. Kyle Walker-Peters might go the other way.

However, Town are also interested in reuniting with Downes, who is under contract with West Ham until the summer of 2027.

Academy product Downes left the Blues for Swansea during Paul Cook’s famed ‘demolition man’ summer of 2021, after being forced to train with the U23s throughout the pre-season.

However, despite the way his tenure at Portman Road ended, and despite being booed by fans on his first competitive return with the Saints last season, we hear Downes has no ill will towards the club if a return to Portman Road becomes possible.

Downes was briefly considered for a return to Town last summer, but the financial aspects of a loan move were thought to be beyond the Blues’ capabilities at the time.

The Brentwood-born schemer made 75 starts and 25 substitute appearances for the Blues, scoring three times.
