Ipswich Town given huge boost over star man ahead of January

Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy has informed the Egyptian FA that he does not wish to be considered for AFCON selection.

Ipswich Town have had a tremendous season thus far, and midfielder Morsy has been instrumental in their success. He became a fan favorite after arriving from Middlesbrough in 2021, and he helped guide the Tractor Boys back to the Championship last season.

He’s also led them to a successful 2023/24 season, missing only one league game. Morsy has appeared in 23 Championship games for Kieran McKenna’s team, contributing two goals and three assists.

Ipswich Town, on the other hand, has been anticipating a blow regarding Morsy ahead of January. Egypt is preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations, and Morsy had been expected to be called up, but according to the East Anglian Daily Times, he has declared himself unable.

The 32-year-old would rather concentrate on Ipswich Town’s promotion bid than play a little role at AFCON. It is also stated that this will ‘likely’ be the end of his career with Egypt.

McKenna’s go-to partnership staying

Morsy’s decision means McKenna will have access to both of his mainstay midfielders. Massimo Luongo retired from international football earlier this month, just ahead of Australia’s Asian Cup campaign.

Now, after it appeared that both might be unavailable in January, Ipswich Town will have both accessible. That will be a significant help for the Suffolk club as they look to retain momentum in their Championship promotion campaign.

The call-ups of Cameron Burgess and Elkan Baggott to Australia and Indonesia, respectively, will leave the Tractor Boys short on centre-back alternatives. Players are in place to cover, and with the star midfield tandem still in place, Ipswich’s roster will be strong heading into the New Year.

AFCON begins on January 13th and ends on February 11th, thus Morsy might have been out for a while.
