Insider: Michigan Wolverines QB JJ McCarthy anticipates to go surprisingly high in the 2024 NFL Draft

JJ McCarthy, the Michigan Wolverines quarterback, finished his college career with a national championship.

McCarthy, who follows in the footsteps of coach Jim Harbaugh, might be one of the most sought-after additions to NFL rosters this summer.

McCarthy, at 6-foot-3, is not one of the most decorated quarterbacks in this class. Unlike Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels, he has not won the Heisman Trophy. Nor does the Wolverines’ quarterback have the stats to match Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix.

  • JJ McCarthy stats: 167.4 QB rating, 2,991 passing yards, 22-4 TD-INT, 9.0 ypa

As NFL teams evaluate the 2024 quarterback class, their judgment of McCarthy aligns more closely with Harbaugh’s than previously thought.

According to Dane Brugler, an NFL Draft expert for The Athletic, McCarthy is expected to be selected in the top 12 picks in 2024. He also did not rule out McCarthy finishing as high as sixth overall.

McCarthy is expected to stand out throughout the pre-draft process, particularly in meetings with NFL teams. The reigning first-team All-Big Ten quarterback has been invited to the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, where he is expected to wow teams with his football IQ, leadership, and manner.

While there were some concerns late in the 2023 season about McCarthy’s drop in production and the Wolverines’ offense pulling the football away from him more, the consensus is that it was a reflection of Michigan’s current success.
