Injury Update: Colts RB has thumb injury, future status is uncertain

Renowned NFL Insider Ian Rappoport reports that Jonathan Taylor, the running back for the Indianapolis Colts, hurt his thumb during Sunday’s victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

#Colts RB Jonathan Taylor, fresh off a 91-yard, 2-TD performance in a win over the #Bucs, suffered an injured thumb that is requiring further evaluation and puts his status in doubt going forward, sources say.

Taylor was able to play through the injury, which appeared to have happened at some point in the first half of the game, and he finished the day with 91 yards and two touchdowns from the ground. According to Rappoport, the thumb is being evaluated, but it’s possible that Taylor will miss some time because of it.

Given how important Taylor is to Indianapolis’ offense, his absence would be felt greatly as the team prepares for an unexpected playoff push that only a few weeks ago seemed improbable.

Fortunately for the team, Zack Moss, the running back, is still with them. He played well against Tampa Bay’s excellent run defense on Sunday. Moss gained 55 yards from eight carries in addition to two 15-yard receptions. Although Moss hasn’t played as much lately, it’s largely been in tandem with Taylor’s comeback to prominence following his four-game suspension due to a contract dispute.

Despite missing the opening game due to an injury, Moss proved to be a very capable lead back for the team during Taylor’s absence, racking up 445 rushing yards in the first five weeks of the campaign. With Moss taking over as the starting quarterback in the event that Taylor must miss a substantial amount of time, the Colts are still in good hands.
