Injury Update: Chiefs superman continues to suffer with injury

The Chiefs continue to play it safe with their first-round draft pick. The Kansas City Chiefs are taking no chances with Xavier Worthy.

Over the second day in a straight, and over the past few weeks, the Chiefs have limited Worthy’s exercises during offseason training activities—that is, if he is allowed to practice at all. That’s because he’s still dealing with a hamstring ailment that developed after the draft.

On Wednesday, the Chiefs convened for the second day of a three-day required minicamp, and the only players absent are those with noteworthy ailments, which were to be expected. That includes offensive lineman Joe Thuney and defensive end BJ Thompson, who was released from the hospital earlier this week after suffering a heart collapse before a scheduled workout last Thursday.

Return to Worthy. The Chiefs selected Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft as the fastest player in the whole draft class, after he set the record for the fastest 40-yard sprint at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in 4.21 seconds. The argument against him was his size and potential durability concerns, which will be exacerbated by his inability to train, but the Chiefs are doing the right thing by playing it safe.

As lovely as it would be to see Worthy in action, and as beneficial as these reps might be for younger players, the truth is that a hamstring injury can be picky and linger a long time if not properly treated. For example, Trent McDuffie missed half of his rookie season due to a hamstring injury.

It is better to get Worthy healthy now and have him available for training camp repetitions in St. Joseph than to force something here and jeopardize the preseason (and beyond).
