In the NFL mock draft: The Indianapolis Colts pick a running back

In a recent mock draft, the Indianapolis Colts selected Michigan running back Blake Corum in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Josh Edwards of CBS Sports compiled a seven-round mock draft. He predicts the Indianapolis Colts will select running back Blake Corum in the third round (82nd overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Running back is not one of the Colts’ primary needs. Jonathan Taylor, the league’s leading rusher in 2021, is still on the roster. Furthermore, the team boasts a handful of decent backups. Corum, on the other hand, would be an excellent choice since he would add depth to Indianapolis’ running back group.

Career at Michigan

Blake Corum played four seasons with the Michigan Wolverines. He played in all six games as a rookie, rushing for 77 yards and two touchdowns. He also had five receptions for 73 yards and five kickoff returns for 96 yards.

As a sophomore, Corum carried for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns. He had 24 receptions and returned 12 kickoffs for 304 yards.

In 2022, Corum rushed for 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns. He finished seventh in the Heisman voting, trailing Caleb Williams, Max Duggan, C.J. Stroud, Stetson Bennett, Hendon Hooker, and Bryce Young. He was also voted the Big Ten Most Valuable Player.

Last season, Corum rushed for 1,245 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also has 16 receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown.

The Virginia native helped Michigan win its first national championship since 1997. He won offensive MVP honors in the championship game with 134 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Corum, who concluded his career with 58 rushing touchdowns, is a renowned Michigan running back. He was a key contributor to the school’s three consecutive Big Ten championships and national crown.

Should the Colts Draft Blake Corum?

When healthy, Jonathan Taylor ranks among the NFL’s most dangerous running backs. However, he has missed 13 games in the last two years.

Taylor’s backup last season, Zack Moss, is coming off a successful 2023 season. He rushed for a career-high 794 yards and five touchdowns, while also adding 192 receiving yards. However, the former third-round draft pick signed with the Cincinnati Bengals earlier this offseason.

Trey Sermon and Evan Hull, who missed the entire rookie season due to injury, are anticipated to replace Moss. If the Colts do choose Corum, he might fight with those two to be Taylor’s primary backup.

Corum is among the best running back prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft. The five-foot-eight, 205-pounder is elusive and has a propensity for rushing hard between the tackles. He’s a patient runner with excellent vision.

Corum is incredibly strong. At the NFL Combine, he led all running backs with 27 225-pound bench press reps. He outperformed Notre Dame offensive lineman Joe Alt, who is 6 feet 8 and weighs 321 pounds. Both prospects hoisted the bar 27 times, demonstrating Corum’s impressive strength given his height.

The Colts obviously use assistance at cornerback, safety, and wide receiver. Those positions will very certainly be addressed at the draft.

But if they choose Blake Corum, it will not be a bad move. He has the ability to become an offensive playmaker.
