In response to Ken Walker’s injury, the Seahawks sign a former 12-TD running back

According to the most recent Seattle Seahawks news, the team has added insurance at running back with the acquisition of rookie SaRodorick Thompson.

The news comes as both Ken Walker III and Zach Charbonnet are recovering from injuries.

Seattle is well familiar with the running back, who had a strong collegiate career at Texas Tech and has already had numerous spells with the squad this season. Thompson most recently signed with the Seahawks on October 23, only to be released less than a week later. With the Jets poaching quarterback Brett Rypien, Seattle had an available practice squad position.

Thompson had his greatest statistical season in 2019, with 160 carries for 765 yards and 12 touchdowns. During his 12 appearances in 2019, the running back also collected 39 receptions for 154 yards. Thompson had 540 rushes for 2,664 yards and 40 touchdowns in five seasons with the Red Raiders.

Seattle needs all the support it can get against San Francisco. Against the Niners, the Seahawks are a big 10.5-point underdog. It’s unclear whether Walker will be able to play in Week 14.

There are some encouraging signals that Walker will return to the field shortly. Walker is “flying around” during walk-through practice, according to Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, but the playmaker will not play against the 49ers.

“Kenny ran around pretty good in the walkthrough, yeah,” Carroll told reporters on December 6. “It was exciting to see him moving around out there.” He was swooping around. We need to get him through the week and see what happens. We have no idea.”

Walker has missed the last two games due to an oblique injury suffered on November 19 against the Rams. This season, the second-year back has 149 carries for 613 running yards and six touchdowns.

The Seattle Seahawks Wanted to Add Insurance With Both Ken Walker & Zach Charnonnet Battling Injuries

Thompson’s signing isn’t always a terrible omen for Walker’s future. With Walker and Charbonnet both injured, Seattle is likely more concerned about the need for insurance. DeeJay Dallas and Kenny McIntosh are also on the Seahawks’ roster.

Thompson was regarded as “tough and strong” by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein ahead of the 2023 draft. Thompson eventually went undrafted before signing as a rookie free agent with the Saints and Seahawks.

“Thompson possesses several pieces of the puzzle, but they fail to create a consistent product on the field,” Zierlein stated in his article. “He’s tough and strong, but a more aggressive approach would benefit him.” Indecisiveness and dancing will cost him yards against NFL fronts that are faster and more talented.

“He’ll probably need to show he can get downhill and finish with power if he wants to make an NFL roster.” Thompson has limited special teams experience, but he has the personality to contribute in that area. If he passes his tests, his measurables and ability to play multiple downs could give him an advantage in the quest for a roster position.”
