‘I’m praying that it wasn’t anything worse’: Text from Deshaun Watson following Browns’ victory over the Colts

After leaving the game early in Sunday’s 39-38 victory over the Colts, in which he completed only one of his five throw attempts for one interception, Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson fielded questions from media.

The Colts public relations staff has given the transcript, which is shown below:

With you not going back in the game, and the conversation you had with Kevin Stefanski, what’s going on there?

“Just a medical choice that is made in collaboration with the staff and all involved parties.” They believed that allowing P.J. Walker to enter the game, see it through, and ensure the team won was the wisest course of action.

Did you feel like you aggravated the shoulder any worse?

“I’m not sure, we will figure that out tomorrow.”

Did you try to throw at all after that?

“No, I didn’t. Once he told me that, the decision was pretty much made.”

Will you have an MRI tomorrow to kind of look at the shoulder again and make sure everything is, okay?

“Even I’m unsure. I am aware that when I arrive tomorrow, I will simply follow whatever protocols in place and proceed accordingly.”

Were you hit on the shoulder?

“Yes sir.”
Before that happened, it looked like you had a slow start, do you think that was just from two weeks off?
“Really, there were just five passes.” I was hit on one, it was a check-down, and the other was a deep ball that was picked off as a screen. That’s four quarters, if you want to go ahead and call that a slow start. You have to play for 60 minutes, and I don’t think anyone can take two or three seriously and call that a slow start.”

Did you push back on him keeping you on the sidelines, did you really want to go back out and continue to play the game?

“I’m a competitor, so of course I want to compete. I want to go out there and play, perform, and compete while also doing everything in my power to support the team. However, they believed that the choice was optimal for the team. Everyone else played a fantastic job of winning, and P.J. Walker did a fantastic job of closing off the game.”

Was there any point during the play, then you rolled out to your left and tried to throw, did you know you tried to put yourself in jeopardy?

“No, it wasn’t my thought. As I’ve already stated to the media, I want to be unhindered and free of any obstacles when I take the field. I just wasn’t able to finish the game, despite the fact that we had a terrific week of preparation and thought it would be the best chance for me to return this week. That was essentially how it transpired.”

Do you expect the start in Seattle?

“I’m not sure, we will see.”

Did you have to go back in the tent again to have the possible head injury checked, like first it was the shoulder then the head is that what is going on?

“The head injury surprised me; until I entered the tent, I had no idea that I would be declared out due to a concussion. Yes, that was kind of the situation; my main concern was the shoulder, not the head. I believe that when my head struck the turf, the spotter at the top called me down to get it examined, but based on their assessment, I passed that examination the first time.”

Kevin Stefanski said, “I’m protecting our franchise quarterback.” Did he explain it to you like that and did you understand that situation?

“It’s understandable, and as I’ve already stated, I want to participate and support the team in winning, but at the end of the day, this is a muscle that I actually need in order to compete and perform at my best. I can appreciate his perspective; all we need to do is make sure we proceed according to the plan.”

Based on what you feel like or felt like after that hit, are you fairly confident it didn’t get any worse or are you just totally not sure?

“I hope and pray that it was not worse. All I can do at the moment is keep up my prayers and wait to see what occurs tomorrow.”

How did it feel after the two straight days of throwing in practice on Thursday and Friday? Did you feel good when you came out today and the game started?

“Yes, I felt good, but practicing and playing a real game are not the same things. In practice, everything is essentially under control. We went into it with a positive attitude, and after testing it, I was unable to complete it.”

Can you talk about P.J.’s (Walker) moxie on that last drive and bringing you guys down and getting the win?

“I mean, ask P.J. (Walker). He’s a professional and has been doing this a long time. He has a lot of experience but even throughout the week me, P.J. and DTR (Dorian Thompson-Robinson) – everything that me and Kevin (Stefanski) is meeting on, I make sure P.J. is meeting on it. There are different things that Kevin is explaining to me throughout the week I go over and I tell P.J. ‘Hey P.J., do you see this? Hey, they might do this protection, you know this that and the third.’ I just make sure we are all on the same page because if something like this, you know but if something like this was to happen I was going to make sure he was ready and prepared and is seeing the same thing I was seeing, the same thing I’m communicating with the receivers and the o-line so we can all be on the same page so we can do what we did today and go out there and win.”
