How Cardinals Aided Create NFL Record in Week 10

In Week 10, the Arizona Cardinals created NFL history with a game-winning field goal.

The Arizona Cardinals don’t exactly have many victory Mondays, but their 2-8 record gives them some optimism for the future.

In his first game back after a serious injury, Kyler Murray overcame early turnovers to craft a game-winning drive that ultimately resulted in a 25-23 loss for the Atlanta Falcons. It was an incredible comeback, fit for a Hollywood script.

That helped establish a new league record.

From the NFL:

“In Week 10, five teams—ARIZONA, CLEVELAND, DETROIT, HOUSTON, and SEATTLE—converted a game-winning field goal with zero seconds remaining in regulation, making it the most such touchdowns in an NFL week ever.

“With two games left in Week 10, nine out of the twelve games (75 percent) have ended in a tie after the fourth quarter, with nine of those games decided by a single point.

“This season, 69.6 percent of all games (103 of 148 games) have been within one score (eight points) in the fourth quarter through Week 10.”

With time running out, Matt Prater made a 23-yard field goal to give the Cardinals the victory. On field goal attempts, he was 4–4.

Jonathan Gannon lauded all three aspects of Arizona’s victory after the game:

“You look at the game, I think on all three phases, as always we can clean things up on all three phases, but all three phases did things, made enough plays in there to win the game. That was just what I told them. It was complimentary football. I thought we did some things situationally that were extremely smart. Our guys executed those. That’s what it takes to beat a playoff-caliber team, so hats off to those guys. Obviously, (QB Kyler Murray) 1 coming back, he made plays with his legs and made plays with his arm. The last two-minute (drive) there, I know (where) the line to gain there for a field goal (was) and where we’re comfortable. He said ‘I’m going to get it all the way down there’, and that’s what he did. Obviously a jolt of energy and belief within our team. That’s why he is who he is. I couldn’t be happier for the guy. Onto Houston.”
