‘He’s fine’: Birmingham City’s summer signing will take on previous club tonight

Dion Sanderson is available to play tonight evening, according to Birmingham City manager Wayne Rooney.

Birmingham City return to Championship action on Saturday when they travel to Wales to face play-off contenders Cardiff City.

Sanderson, 23, was injured in the Blues’ previous game against Coventry City. His team went on to lose 2-0 to the Sky Blues.

In this latest update regarding his condition, Rooney has said, as per a report by BirminghamLive: “He’s fine now. As I said after the game, it was a strange one. He woke up at 2am with a massive pain in his foot. He was close to taking himself to the hospital. He came in and he was struggling to walk on it and he wasn’t available for that reason.

“He went for a scan and the scan showed a little bit of floating bone. We think that was triggering his nerve to cause the pain. He’s had a little bit of work on that and it’s moved the bone, that’s eased it up.

“He has trained since and sometimes you have this. I’ve never heard of it, it’s a freak one. Going off Dion and the scan, he’s recovered from that and he’s ready to play.”

Birmingham City selection latest

The return of Sanderson is a positive for Birmingham, and Rooney must decide whether to bring him back immediately.

As a youth, the centre-back had a loan spell at Cardiff in 2020, when he appeared 10 times.

He progressed through the Wolves academy and was a regular for the Premier League club at various youth levels. However, he only made one appearance for their first team.

Instead, he spent time away from Molineux with clubs such as Cardiff, Sunderland, and QPR in the second division to gain experience.

Sanderson had two brief experiences with the Blues before being signed on a permanent basis in the summer. He has since appeared in 21 games for the Midlands team this season, 19 of which have come in the league.

Birmingham needs to start producing more results and will be ready to cause difficulties for Cardiff tonight.

Rooney hasn’t had the impact he would have liked, and his team has dropped to 17th in the table. They are ten points out of first place and four points above the relegation zone.
