Head-To-Head Encounter Between Millers v Ipswich Town

For their next league game, the Millers travel to Suffolk to play Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

On a Tuesday night in November 2021, Ben Wiles scored in the first half, followed by Shane Ferguson in the second, to give the Millers all three points at Portman Road. In October 2019, Rotherham achieved the identical result, with Matt Crooks scoring both goals.

The two teams met at Portman Road in January 2019, and Will Keane scored the game’s sole goal soon after the half-hour mark, giving the hosts all three points.

During the Millers’ October 2016 visit, Freddie Sears gave the hosts the lead after three minutes, but Danny Ward equalized four minutes later. Three minutes into the second half, Ward made it two-one for the Millers, but David McGoldrick scored late to make it two-two.

In March 2016, a Leon Best goal a minute before halftime earned the Millers a one-nil victory at Portman Road. Greg Halford of the Millers received yellow cards on the day, as did Jonas Knudsen of Ipswich.

The previous season’s encounter at Portman Road was won by the hosts with two goals in the first six minutes. Daryl Murphy scored in three minutes, and David McGoldrick added a second goal three minutes later. Kari Arnason and Lee Frecklington noticed yellow that afternoon.

Before that, the Millers were visitors at Ipswich in April 2005, when Ian Westlake and Darren Bent put the hosts up 2-0 in the first 25 minutes. Tony Thorpe made it two-one a minute later, but in the second half, Jim Magilton and Bent restored Ipswich’s two-goal advantage.

On the 67th minute, Jamal Campbell-Ryce played a sweet ball for Martin Butler to score, and twelve minutes later, a free-kick from Martin McIntosh made it interesting when it was deflected past Kelvin Davis in the home goal to make it four-three, and the Millers couldn’t score another to salvage anything from the game.

Unfortunately, the Millers were the first team relegated from the Championship that season, with Ipswich finishing second.

Brian Tiler (2), Albert Bennett, and Barry Lyons scored goals for the Millers in a Division Two encounter at Ipswich in October 1964, which finished four-four. Rotherham finished third in the table, with Ipswich at the bottom.

The teams split the points in November’s encounter at New York Stadium. Sam Nombe put the Millers ahead after just four minutes, but Sam Morsy leveled fifteen minutes later. Town took the lead with a Jack Taylor goal after 87 minutes, but Christ Tiehi equalised in extra time to tie the score at two.
