Harrison Butker Offers 1-Word Post with Wife at Super Bowl Ring Ceremony

The Kansas City Chiefs are prepared to achieve something unprecedented in NFL history: win three Super Bowls in a row.

Before embarking on their second consecutive title defense, they had a night to wallow in the pleasure of winning it all once more. On Friday night, Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the rest of the squad gathered for the Super Bowl ring ceremony.

Many of the players were attending their third ring ceremony, having won the Super Bowl with Kansas City in 2019. Coach Reid won his fourth Super Bowl (he previously won one with the Green Bay Packers in 1996).

Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Posts 1-Word Message with Wife at Super Bowl Ring Ceremony

Harrison Butker, a Chiefs kicker, was among the players who received their third Super Bowl ring. Earlier this offseason, Butker made contentious remarks about his ideal position for women in society, complimenting his wife for being a “homemaker,” which he described as the highest calling a woman can have.

During the ring ceremony, Butker made the following post on Instagram:

As seen above, his caption for the photo was one word: “Grateful.”

During his speech, Butker said of his wife (and women):

“For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.

“How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.

“I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I’m on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.

“I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”

Butker’s photo of his wife is the first he’s published since his speech. He had already removed all photographs of her from his social media platforms. This was his first social media post following his speech.

Kansas City Chiefs Players Supported Harrison Butker, but Distanced Themselves from His Message

Butker’s statements, unsurprisingly, sparked quite a commotion online and in the media. Several celebrities and fans rushed to social media to protest Butker’s statement and express their own view that whatever goals they choose for themselves outside of the home are as essential.

On his New Heights podcast, Travis Kelce said of Butker:

“When it comes down to his views and what he said at the [Benedictine College] commencement speech, you know, those are his. I can’t say I agree with the majority of it — or, just about any of it outside of just him loving his family and his kids.

“And I don’t think that I should judge him by his views — especially his religious views of how to go about life. That’s just not who I am.”
