The Nebraska football team is taking advantage of the unrestricted on-field coaches rule by reintroducing someone from the Tom Osborne era.

The more the Nebraska football program changes, the more it remains consistent. One way things are keeping the same is that the Huskers are bringing back an old coach to assist with on-field coaching once more.

Rhule has begun to expand the staff, taking advantage of the regulation change that permits the Huskers to have as many on-field coaches as they want. The Cornhuskers signed Jamar Mozee about ten days ago. Now Ron Brown is back.

Rhule confirmed the experienced coach’s return to the staff during his Big Ten Media Days. While it was unexpected, it appears that Brown will be able to jump right in and help out.

Nebraska football bring back veteran coach

According to Rhule, Brown will not take over a role on his own, but will assist in a variety of ways.

Brown will assist EJ Barthel in the backfield, as he will be in charge of fullbacks. He’ll also help Ed Foley and the special teams by overseeing returners.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this is that it demonstrates Rhule’s clear vision for how he intends to deploy his unlimited coaches. It also suggests that, given his recent NFL experience, he may be one of those who is uniquely positioned to benefit from this rule change.

Veteran Nebraska football coach comes back for 33rd season on the field

Any Nebraska Cornhuskers fan who has followed the team for any length of time knows that Brown’s relationship with the university extends back to Tom Osborne. He coached the Huskers from 1987 to 2003. He then returned in 2008, coaching till 2014.

Since then, he’s had a variety of positions in the Nebraska football program’s athletic department, but he hasn’t played on the field in quite some time. In 2023, Rhule appointed him as Director of Player Support & Outreach. He is now coaching one more time.
