Gordon Low, a football player from Aberdeen who played with friend Denis Law at Huddersfield, has passed away

Gordon Low passed away on Monday, and two of his old teams, Huddersfield Town and Stockport County, paid glowing tributes to the man from the northeast.

An 83-year-old former Aberdeen football player passed away after joining his friend Denis Law at Huddersfield Town in the 1950s.

Growing up in and around the Aberdeen football scene, Gordon Low and his close friend Law moved to the Terriers within a year of one another.

Following Low’s passing on Monday, Huddersfield and Stockport County, another of his previous teams, paid homage to the “skillful but tough tackling” former center half.

The following year, Low joined Law in West Yorkshire. Law was a legendary striker who signed with Huddersfield in 1956 and went on to become an all-time great for both Manchester United and Scotland.

Archie Beattie, the brother of former Scotland manager and Kintore native Andy Beattie, who had managed Huddersfield, had scouted Low.

Under the direction of another renowned manager, Bill Shankly, he would have a memorable Christmas Day debut in 1957, playing in a 2-0 triumph over West Brom in the Second Division.

Before leaving for Bristol City in March 1961, Low played 68 games for Huddersfield and scored six goals from the left half of the field. Law had left for Manchester City the year before, having served as best man at Low’s wedding.

Huddersfield Town paid respect by saying: “On Monday, October 16, 2023, Gordon passed away at the age of 83. Everyone at Huddersfield Town is thinking of his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

After seven years at Ashton Gate, Low signed a £4,500 transfer fee to join Stockport County in 1968. After winning the former Fourth Division the season before, the team gained popularity among Edgeley Park supporters.

“He became an almost ever present in his first season, during which he scored from the penalty spot on his debut vs Reading,” Stockport noted in a tribute.

He made 73 appearances for County in all, scoring nine goals. He was especially proficient at taking penalties. ‘A song of love is a sorrowful song, hi Lili, hi Lili, Gordon Low!’ was his own song, sung by the County faithful on the terraces.

Gordon is known at Edgeley Park as a tough-tackling, competent center half who, had he been endowed with better speed, very easily may have joined his pal Denis Law at the top.” We offer our sympathies to Gordon’s friends and family during this extremely difficult time.
