Georgia’s reserve quarterback is set to play a significant role on G-Day

Georgia Bulldogs backup quarterback Gunner Stockton is expected to play a significant part in the Dawgs’ annual spring scrimmage.

Georgia’s G-Day scrimmage will take place on Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m. ET in Sanford Stadium. The event will be broadcast on SEC Network Plus.

The Bulldogs typically play pass-heavy spring games. Georgia will air it out on Saturday, and quarterbacks Gunner Stockton and Carson Beck will undoubtedly get plenty of reps. Georgia does not have as much quarterback depth as in previous years, so fans should expect Stockton and Beck to take the majority of quarterback snaps. Furthermore, the injury of freshman Ryan Puglisi will limit competition for snaps as the Dawgs’ signal caller.

Stockton is hopeful ahead of Georgia’s spring game. Here’s why Stockton has a major opportunity on G-Day, as well as his thoughts on his spring performance.

Georgia passes a bunch in its spring game

Georgia has traditionally aired the ball out during its spring game. Georgia, for example, threw 69 passes and ran 34 times in 2023, accounting for 67% of total rushing/passing plays. Georgia attempted 91 passes in 2022, compared to only 33 runs in 2022 (73.4% of total rushing/passing plays).

Knee injury to quarterback Ryan Puglisi

Georgia’s third-string quarterback gets a lot of snaps on G-Day. However, freshman early enrollee Ryan Puglisi may not participate or will be limited due to a knee issue.

Georgia has no fourth scholarship quarterback

Due to injuries and a lack of depth, Gunner Stockton is expected to play a large number of snaps. Stockton understands that Georgia may bring in another quarterback through the transfer portal this spring. Collin Drake, a walk-on, is Georgia’s current fourth quarterback. A walk-on (Stetson Bennett is not included) has not attempted a pass in either of Georgia’s last two spring games.

Stockton details what a successful G-Day looks like for him

“Probably being productive, but at the end of the day, I want my team to win, regardless of which side I’m on.” Red or black, whatever I can attribute to that role of victory will most likely make me happy,” Stockton stated.

Stockton on his spring practice performance

“It began off really hot. I believe that was the first padded practice, and I did not throw an incompletion, so I’m just continuing from there and trying to build. I mean, everyone has difficult days, and I’ve had mine, but just keep trying to build and complete it the proper way,” Stockton explained. If Stockton does not throw an incompletion on G-Day, some supporters believe he should start over Carson Beck.

On waiting behind Carson Beck and not transferring

“Carson is a wonderful example. He’s demonstrated resilience, and he’s waited his turn. I mean, he has worked hard. He’s proven to be one of the best quarterbacks, and it’s an honor to learn from him. It’s quite fantastic. I mean, at Georgia, you’re going to win, so that’s the most important part,” Stockton said. Stockton, Georgia’s backup quarterback, is getting plenty of quality reps against tough competition in practice and in the spring game.
