Georgia Tech signs transfer defensive back

Gibbs is Georgia Tech’s sixth transfer commitment.

Georgia Tech has added another veteran defensive back to its roster via the transfer portal.

Syeed Gibbs, a Rhode Island transfer defensive back, announced his commitment to Brent Key and the Yellow Jackets on social media today. This season, Gibbs had 52 tackles, three tackles for loss, six pass breakups, and three interceptions. He still has three years of eligibility left.

Gibbs joins Tennessee’s Warren Burrell as the second defensive back transfer to pledge to Georgia Tech. He is Georgia Tech’s sixth transfer commitment overall.

Burrell was an SEC-level starter at cornerback for Tennessee prior to his injury, and if he can stay healthy, this might be a significant acquisition for Georgia Tech. They may try to add to this job as well.

According to his bio at Tennessee Athletics:

“Experienced cornerback who had a career year in 2021 as one of the Vols’ starters before missing the majority of the 2022 season with an upper body injury … Played in 40 games with 22 starts, all at cornerback, and has two years of eligibility remaining … Accumulated 89 total tackles, has nine PBUs, one interception and a fumble recovery to his credit … Plays with the SEC graduate patch after earning his degree in Dec. 2022.”

At linebacker, Georgia Tech went and got a player from another ACC school.

Jackson Hamilton, a Louisville linebacker transfer, revealed his transfer to Georgia Tech on social media Thursday afternoon. Hamilton attended Blessed Trinity Catholic High School in Georgia and will be returning to fight for a linebacker position at Georgia Tech next season. Hamilton still has two years of eligibility remaining.

Hamilton played three seasons for the Cardinals, from 2021 to 2023, totaling 17 tackles and one pass deflection. He will provide athleticism to the position at 6’1 220 LBS, and I am excited to see how he will fit in the defense next year.

Jackson Hawes, a Yale transfer tight end, stated Wednesday that he will move to Georgia Tech. This season and last, Hawes was a second-team All-Conference tight end for Yale. The 6’5 255 LBS tight end caught 35 catches for 375 yards and six touchdowns in his career.

Ryland Goede, who played tight end for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2019 to 2022 before moving to Mississippi State last season, announced his transfer to Georgia Tech yesterday night. Goede, who attended Kennesaw Mountain High School in high school, will be back in Georgia and eager to contribute to the Yellow Jackets.
