Georgia signs new DB coach

The University of Georgia has hired a new defensive backs coach.

Fran Brown, Georgia’s longtime defensive back coach, was named head coach of Syracuse earlier this month, opening the door for Kirby Smart to hire a new coach.

Donte Williams is the new coach. Williams previously coached the same position at USC. Williams has been a student at USC since 2020. The 41-year-old Culver City native is a southern California native. Williams attended Pasadena City College in 2002, Syracuse University in 2003, and Idaho State in 2004 and 2005.

Williams worked as a quality control coach at Nevada in 2010. After that, he worked as a graduate assistant at Washington in 2011 and 2012, and then as a secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at San Jose State from 2013 to 2015.

In 2016, Williams was also the cornerbacks coach at Arizona. In 2017, he moved to Nebraska to coach the cornerbacks. Williams was Oregon’s cornerbacks coach for two seasons, 2018-19.

Williams is a well-known recruiter who is widely recognized as one of the best in the country. During his coaching tenure, Willimas has been the primary recruiter for six 5-star players. That’s most likely why Williams was added to Kirby Smart’s coaching staff. Being a terrific coach is one thing, but Kirby Smart is searching for someone who can also be a tremendous recruiter.

Donte Williams is an excellent addition. There aren’t many folks out there that have been the principal recruiter for six separate 5* prospects. This further cements UGA’s position as a national recruiting powerhouse. This decision will have recruitment ramifications for years to come.

Williams was also the interim head coach at USC after Clay Helton and Lincoln Riley were fired. Williams was the Trojans’ head coach for nine games, going 3-7. Riley hired Williams and he is still on his staff today.

This is most likely the finest coach to succeed Fran Brown, a fantastic recruiter. Georgia and Kirby Smart have landed a superb coach as well as a great recruiter. Williams is expected to be in Athens on Monday to coach the Orange Bowl defensive backs.
