Georgia Football is the top program in college football.

Many individuals would not contest that issue with you right now. The Dawgs’ current dominance stems from the roster’s talent. Georgia is a wealthy state from top to bottom. The roster is littered with four- and five-star athletes, as seen by their performance on Saturdays.

However, many people ignore the 3-star or below players that contribute significantly to the squad. Georgia fans are well aware that, while the Dawgs have been in the top five in recruiting since Kirby Smart took over in 2016, they also have players who were unknown at the time of recruitment who play an important role.

Pickell is completely correct in claiming that Kirby Smart can nurture talent. He cited Ladd McConkey as an illustration of how the Dawgs are “Development U.” While that is the most recent example of Smart and his staff elevating an unknown to prominence, I can think of many others. My mind immediately jumps to the most obvious example: Stetson Bennett IV.

There are numerous athletes that arrived to Athens with 3-star ratings and were molded into NFL talent. That is what Kirby Smart and his staff do: they develop athletes regardless of their high school star ranking.

Detractors will refer to recruitment rankings as evidence that the Dawgs are one of the best programs. While that is part of the Athens formula, it is not the entire story. Developing athletes is critical to success in today’s college football landscape. Players can now leave whenever they choose, which will likely become the norm for the time being.

Trying to develop players might be difficult due to the high turnover rate. The secret to Georgia’s success is investing time in scouting and identifying individuals who are typically ignored by other programs.
