Gary Rowett weighs in on probable Birmingham City transfer departure
Birmingham City’s outgoing boss Gary Rowett has had his say on Blues’ upcoming transfer window.
The 50-year-old from Bromsgrove had his second tenure with the Blues end over the weekend, but he will continue to monitor the situation in the upcoming transfer window. Rowett expects that the majority of key players will stay to help the club recover quickly, but he understands that this is not an easy task.
“There will be some sad Bluenoses there because they have done so much for the football club over the years, and the history is incredible.” “They certainly do not want to be in League One,” Rowett stated during his most recent post-match press conference.
“In the coming weeks, the club will have a lot to accomplish to prepare for the next season. You certainly cannot afford to wait too long for those weeks of planning. They will undoubtedly have to make some major decisions about player contracts and how they want the group to appear next season.
“I think there’s some players there that it’d be great if they showed the responsibility to say, ‘You know, I’m going to get this football club back in the Championship’. Sometimes it’s easy to look for a way out but that’s something the players need to look at it,” Rowett said.
It’s not just the responsibility of the players, though, with owners Knighthead – led by Tom Wagner – required to offer intelligent and clear leadership. Rowett has faith in the board to repay the patience of the fans but even then it will be tricky.
“Hopefully Tony [Mowbray] comes back as a manager to get the club back in the Championship because there’s going to be a great opportunity if they make the right steps,” Rowett added before exiting the St Andrew’s at Knighthead Park press room for the final time.
