Gary Lineker gives a harsh one-word analysis of Burnley’s heartbreaking loss to Brentford

On Saturday, the Clarets were defeated 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium in a match that was entirely one-sided.

This indicates that after nine league games, Vincent Kompany’s team has now lost seven of them.

Burnley has no complaints at all about the outcome; in fact, they should feel lucky to have kept the score close to three.

Ten of the Bees’ twenty-three attempts on goal were on target, resulting in Lineker’s statement: “It was a drubbing really, wasn’t it? Just take a look at the total and on-target shots. Isn’t it all the proof you require, Micah?

Richards answered, “Yeah, they [Brentford] were just great.” They were excellent tonight, but this season has been a bit of a mixed bag.

The Match of the Day panel also talked about why Neal Maupay’s close-range goal in the first half denied Brentford a second one.

Nathan Collins, a former Claret, had played the ball across goal while in an onside position, but referees determined that another Brentford player was interfering with play after a VAR assessment.

Richards continued, “We just want to clear this one up.”

The reason the goal wasn’t given was because [Kristoffer] Ajer was on [Lyle] Foster at the back post while, in reality, he was offside and interfering with play.

“I’m sorry for Maupay; he’s been excellent with both Bryan Mbeumo and Yeoane Wissa.

“I watched them against Everton and he seemed to have no confidence, he wasn’t really linking up, but [against Burnley] he showed the movement, he knew when to drop off, when to go into space, when to lay it off as well.

“He’s playing with confidence now; it’s clear that he understands the system and their goals.”

After the loss on Saturday, Burnley is now just four points out of safety and lingers in the bottom three.

Below them is a Bournemouth team that they will play the next week on the South Coast.
