Gardner Minshew’s Future Is In Doubt, According to ESPN

Gardner Minshew of the Indianapolis Colts is expected to become a free agent at the end of the season. Will the Colts be able to keep him?

Gardner Minshew and the Indianapolis Colts aren’t thinking about the summer just yet. After a dismal 2022 season, they’re in a race for the AFC South and an unexpected postseason position.

While the Colts and Minshew are focused on the Atlanta Falcons this week, a number of teams are already looking ahead to next season. Those organizations, as well as the media that speculates on them, consider Minshew to be one of the top free agent targets in 2024.

Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano of ESPN speculated on Minshew’s future and believe that, despite interest from other teams, the Colts are the best fit for him.

“I know Minshew wants to be a starter again, and he has certainly demonstrated this season that he is capable of doing so.” But I’m wondering if Indy is the right fit for him,” Graziano wrote on ESPN+. “Even if starting quarterback Anthony Richardson returns and is healthy (shoulder) next year, I believe it may be in the Colts’ best interests to keep Minshew in the role they envisioned for him this season.” Unless there’s a team out there prepared to promise Minshew a starting job, that feels like a win-win.”

A team ready to offer Minshew a starting spot, like the Colts’ next opponent, who has yo-yo’d Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke as starters this season, could be interested. By the way, Heinicke is back after the Falcons benched Ridder for the second and most likely last time.

“Minshew has been awesome, but it’s hard to see him as more than a high-level No. 2 or a bridge starter at this stage — a really good one, to be sure,” Fowler wrote in an email. “He’d be perfect in a situation where the team drafts a quarterback in the first round but wants to sit that rookie for a year, which I know doesn’t happen much anymore.”
