Florial, who is 26 years old, has no minor league options left after a few promising games at the end of the 2023 season. He appeared in 19 games and batted.230/.324/.311, with eight RBIs, a 28.2% strikeout rate, and a 9.9% walk rate. Florial’s 83 wRC+ indicated that he was 17% worse than the average player, but he is a good defensive piece with great athleticism.
This could be Florial’s last chance to sign with the Yankees during spring training, especially with Everson Pereira vying for a spot on the depth chart. Pereira has an advantage because he is only 22 years old and dominated in Triple-A last year, but he struggled in MLB, hitting.151/.233/.194. He has underappreciated power and only needs to improve his chase rate and plate discipline to improve his averages.
Florial is still dealing with the same issues, including a high strikeout rate that limits his ability to make quality contact. His potential as a lefty hitter, however, and Yankee Stadium were always factors in his hype. At this point, he faces a significant challenge in breaking into the roster, but nothing is impossible.
