Former West Brom wants a stunning Birmingham City return

According to Football Insider, Steve Bruce wants to make a surprising comeback to Birmingham City as manager beginning next season.

Bruce, 63, is not yet ready to end his managerial career and still hopes to lead a new squad, with a probable vacancy at his former club putting him on edge.

This follows Football Insider’s revelation that Tony Mowbray, who has been on medical leave since February, may not return to manage Birmingham.

Meanwhile, insiders told Football Insider that the Blues’ board had already determined Gary Rowett would not be retained beyond this season.

Following their relegation from the Championship, which was formally confirmed despite a win against Norwich on the final day of the season, Birmingham could look to the veteran manager to help them climb back up.

He is thought to have informed his former team that he is interested in the position, which will be in League One next season if it is available.

Bruce, who had gained promotion twice in his last term with the Blues, both from the Championship to the Premier League, presents an intriguing, if unusual, possibility.

Steve Bruce in running to take over as Birmingham City boss

Bruce led Birmingham from 2001 to 2007, after previously playing for the club between 1996 and 1998.

He left the Blues in May 2007 for a then-world record £3 million compensation sum due to issues with the ownership.

His most recent managerial position was with West Brom until being fired in 2022, prompting many to fear he would retire from management.

However, with the Birmingham opportunity potentially presenting itself, a remarkable return to the Midlands is now on the cards.
