Steven Taylor, a former Ipswich Town defender, has been named the first head coach of new UAE club Al Qabila FC.

The 38-year-old will join the Dubai-based team as they enter the UAE Pro League next season.

Taylor retired from football in 2021 after playing for A-League team Wellington Phoenix and serving as captain.

The former Newcastle United manager took over as head coach of UAE club Gulf United in January 2022, and he guided them to back-to-back promotions to the second division.

Taylor left the Eagles in August last year to join Al Qabil FC, coached by professional footballer Soheil Varahram and artistic director Daniyal Sheikh.

The “Building a Pro Football Club in 365 Days” project has gone viral, with tens of millions of views on social media.

Taylor appeared just three times for Town during an injury-plagued stay at Portman Road in the second part of the 2016-17 season.
