A former Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu FC defender has declared his retirement from football at the age of 36.

PSL players frequently struggle to decide whether or not to retire for a variety of reasons. Notable players include Happy Jele, Lebogang Mokoena, and Siphiwe Tshabalala have yet to declare their retirement.

Many unattached individuals continue to exhibit a desire to play.

In contrast, former Orlando Pirates left-back Marc Van Heerden announced his retirement immediately after leaving Cape Town City in June.

Van Heerden, who was born in Johannesburg, took to X on Sunday evening to announce his decision to pursue a coaching career.

FORMER PIRATES DEFENDER CALLS IT A DAY IN FOOTBALL

“I officially retire from the game that has given me everything,” Van Heerden posted on X.

“I entered the game as a boy and left as a man. After 20 years, I embark on my coaching career.

“Many thanks to…” My Angel Mom, My Pops, My Sister and Brother, and Family Who Were There Through It All.

“Thank you, my children, for keeping me youthful. My wife is my best buddy. Thank you, mentor and agent Mike Makaab, for everything you’ve done for me. The incredible players I got the opportunity to compete with and against. To the instructors who dedicated their time to making our goal a reality.

“To the entire backroom personnel that worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Offseasons, preseasons, moments of glory, and times of anguish. The wonderful game shaped who I am. Words will not suffice, but I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been there.

“I’d want to thank the fans that cheered and all of the clubs I played for. Representing my country. I go having given my all. This concludes this chapter and marks the start of a new one. Thank you for the beautiful game.”

Van Heerden has also played for AmaTuks, Cape Town City, Chippa United, and Stellenbosch FC.
