Former Ohio State football boss is incorrect with his NIL take

The former Ohio State football coach was incorrect in his assessment of the NIL.

The Ohio State football program is one of the teams that has embraced NIL. It’s a significant shift in the college football scene that hasn’t gone well for some institutions. Some initiatives have failed to mobilize enough finances to compete.

Former college football coaches despised NIL. It was one of the factors that pushed Nick Saban to retire this year. A former Ohio State football coach dislikes it as well. Urban Meyer recently said some intriguing things regarding NIL.

Meyer argues that NIL has progressed to cheating. He claims that is not the goal of the rule. He’s correct about the intent. What it has developed into is not what administrators expected. However, his overall assessment of the NIL is incorrect, as is usual of a former coach’s comments.

NIL is not deceitful. It allows children to receive money in an open and transparent manner. The best recruits, including a handful from Meyer’s program, were always paid under the table. It occurred everywhere. Everything is now open and accounted for.

I believe it provides an unnecessary advantage to the larger and finest programs. They have everything going for them. It’s one of the reasons why the larger programs are about to split off into a separate division. Smaller programs have little chance of winning a national title with NIL currently.

What this does is level the playing field among the top 30 programs in the country. All of them have a chance to attract the greatest recruits because they can all give money to these kids. It expands the national championship pool for such programs.

Meyer and other former coaches don’t like NIL because it’s different from what they are used to. But it’s not going anywhere so they need to get over it.
