Former Nottingham Forest attacker shines as he achieves MLS breakthrough

Sam Surridge led Nashville SC to a new record with his first MLS goals since leaving Nottingham Forest.

Surridge was selected player of the match in a 3-2 victory over the New England Revolution after scoring a thunderous header and a classic first-time finish across the goalkeeper into the far corner. The 25-year-old also struck the crossbar as he came close to scoring a hat-trick but fell short.

Surridge struggled offensively in his first seven MLS appearances, four of which were starts, but he excelled in the Leagues Cup, a competition between MLS and teams from Mexico’s top division.

He has already played in 12 games for the Tennessee squad, scoring five goals and dishing out two assists. With nine triumphs at home, the victory established a new club record most home wins in a single season.

For over £5 million, Surridge joined Nashville in July. After signing in January 2021, he contributed significantly to gaining promotion to the Premier League with eight goals.

However, he was unable to have a substantial influence on the Premier League. on 20 appearances, 19 of which were as a substitute, he only managed to score once, against his former side Bournemouth.

“I want to thank everyone associated with Nottingham Forest,” Surridge remarked after quitting the team. Since I got here, I’ve just felt extreme pride in being able to play for such a big club.

“It’s something I could only have envisioned when I joined two seasons ago to be a part of its history on getting promoted back to the Premier League and to keep its status.

“I’d like to specifically thank the supporters for their unwavering support over the years.

“It’s time to move forward and start a new chapter in my life. I only want this team and its followers to succeed in the future.
