Former Ipswich Town defender has secured his first coaching job in USA

Former Ipswich Town defender Christophe Berra has been hired interim head coach of MLS Next Pro team Huntsville City until the end of the season.

The 39-year-old was appointed assistant coach in January, but this is his first senior level coaching position with the Alabama-based side, which is effectively the reserve team for MLS club Nashville.

He replaces Jack Collison, another former Town player who had been in charge since January of last year but was fired after failing to win any of his first four games this season.

Berra will lead his first game when Huntsville hosts Crown Legacy in the United States’ third tier tomorrow.

The Scot retired from football in the summer of 2022, following a stint at Raith Rovers, where he began his coaching career as a player-coach.

He was appointed first team coach at Livingston in January 2023, but resigned at the end of the 2022-23 season to coach at Falkirk and the Scotland U21s.

Throughout his four seasons at Portman Road, he appeared in 185 games and scored 14 goals.
