David Marshall, who played for Derby County during the 2020-21 season, has opted to retire from football at the age of 39.

David Marshall, former Derby County goalkeeper, has announced his retirement following a distinguished playing career spanning more than two decades. Marshall was with Derby for 18 months, from the summer of 2020 until the winter of 2022, and played a key role in the club’s dramatic Championship survival at the cost of Sheffield Wednesday.

Marshall appeared 33 times under Phillip Cocu and then under Wayne Rooney in the second half of that season, but the Scottish international did not play again the following season because Kelle Roos and Ryan Allsop were favored during the Rams’ relegation struggle.

Marshall, 39, started at Celtic before joining Norwich City in 2007. After a few years of consistent action at Carrow Road, Marshall made a career-defining transfer to Cardiff City, where he appeared in 281 games over seven years and helped the team win promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

Marshall had spells with Wigan Athletic and Hull City before moving to Derby. He was allowed to join QPR on a free transfer in January 2022 after falling out of favour with Rooney, and the keeper finished his career in Scotland as first choice for Hibernian for the last two years. He has now retired and will take on the post of technical performance manager.

“Having made the decision to retire from football, I’m delighted to be given the opportunity in this role at the football club,” said the coach. “Over the previous two seasons, I’ve gotten to know and understand the club, and I’m looking forward to working closely with Malky Mackay to develop an environment that can provide success on and off the pitch.

“This new post allows me to work across multiple performance divisions within the football club and learn from Malky, who has years of expertise in the game. The supporters’ support will be critical to our success, and I know you will always be there for the squad, David Gray, and his coaching staff. I am looking forward to getting started for the 2024/25 campaign.”
