Devin Mahina, a former BYU tight end and receivers coach at Orem High School, now serves as the Utah Islanders’ offensive coordinator.

Mahina joined David James on Talkin’ Sports to discuss this year’s BYU quarterback competition, the differences between playing in the Big 12 and an independent schedule, and the Islanders’ debut.

Mahina explained that the Islanders provide an opportunity for players aged 18 to 25 to continue playing football. He stated that many of the players deserve a second opportunity.

Some were sidelined due to injury, some searched the transfer portal but were unable to locate a new squad, while some were simply neglected despite their passion for the sport.

The coaches’ biggest difficulty is finding enough linemen. Mahina stated that they have filled 55 of the 60 roster places but are still looking for quality at the line of scrimmage.

According to Mahina, the squad will play its home games at Zion’s Bank Stadium in Herriman and possibly at local high schools as well. Games are scheduled for August and September.
