Last week, NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman stated that former Boston Bruins player Phil Kessel hopes to continue his career despite not having a contract for the 2023-24 season. Given Kessel’s impressive resume, the possibility of him getting another chance in the NHL should not be dismissed.
In the most recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, Friedman discussed Kessel as a possible target for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
“To be honest, Kyle, I was wondering if Phil Kessel would end up with the Blue Jackets. Just because, because I believe Columbus is in for a serious season. They were dissatisfied last year. They want to show some improvement, but I’m curious about a person like Kessel just because he has a reputation for lightening the mood and creating a lot of enjoyment when he’s around.
Don Waddell, the Blue Jackets’ general manager, recently informed Aaron Portzline of The Athletic that he was ready to add to the club’s forward corps. Shortly after, he signed former Bruins forward James van Riemsdyk to a one-year contract worth $900,000. However, looking at their squad, it’s clear that they could use at least one more forward before the season starts. As a result, a player like Kessel could be a good fit in a depth role.
Furthermore, given the tragic loss of Johnny Gaudreau, Friedman’s point about Kessel’s ability to lighten the mood and create enjoyment may make him a good fit for Columbus. The Blue Jackets are in for a difficult season, and Kessel might provide valuable support to the team’s players.
