The former Atlanta Braves first baseman has announced his retirement.

Matt Adams, a first baseman who played two seasons in the Atlanta Braves organization, has formally declared his retirement from baseball following a 10-year career with four different teams.

Adams, who spent the previous ten seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals, and Colorado Rockies, most recently played for the Mexican League’s Toros de Tijuana in 2024.

While Adams is most usually remembered for his stint with the St. Louis Cardinals, he did spend two seasons with the Braves, the first of which was in 2017.

The Cardinals traded Adams to Atlanta in 2017, and he went on to play 100 games for the Braves that season. Adams hit.271/.315/.543 with an.858 OPS, 19 HR, 20 2B, and 58 RBI before entering free agency at the end of the 2017 season.

Adams would then leave the Braves organization until the 2020 season, when he returned to Atlanta on a minor level contract for the abbreviated season. The veteran slugger appeared in 16 games with the Braves that season before being released, batting.184/.216/.347 with a.563 OPS, two home runs, two doubles, and nine RBI.

Over his time in Atlanta overall, Adams posted a combined slash line of .259/.301/.515 with an .816 OPS, 21 HR, 22 2B, and 67 RBI across 116 games. Adams also saw time defensively at both first base and left field, as well as acting solely as the Braves designated hitter in 2020.

As previously stated, Adams will be known primarily for his time with the Cardinals, but there is no disputing that the slugger had an effect while with the Braves, particularly during the 2017 season.
