Gary Monk has been eager to improve Cambridge United’s fortunes after a dismal 23/24 season.

The former Swansea manager has confirmed another loan signing from the Championship.

The League One club concluded the season in 18th place, only four points above the relegation zone after flirting with the drop throughout the season. They’ve already had a somewhat busy window, signing Shayne Lavery, Kell Watts, James Gibbons, Ryan Loft, and Vincente Reyes.

Now, the club has confirmed the signing of 22-year-old attacking midfielder Taylor Richards on a season-long loan from QPR.

What’s been said?

Speaking to the club’s official website, Richards spoke of his delight at the move:

“I am very excited,”

“It’s a big opportunity for me to come here and play some football – I just want to get out there and show what I can do.

“Speaking to the Club about my aims and where I want to get to, and the Club’s aims, and where they want to get to, it all made sense to me.

“I want to get back to enjoying my football and if I am enjoying it, then everything else will come along with that.”

Manager Gary Monk echoed the sentiment.

“Taylor is an exciting talent who has huge potential to be an outstanding player in this league.

“He will bring another dimension to our team and we are very excited to work with him this season. I am delighted to welcome him to the Club.”

A good addition to the side?

Taylor’s career has been up and down, as one would expect from a young player who started in the Premier League. He had a tremendously successful loan spell from Brighton at Doncaster Rovers in 2020, where he exhibited his talents to their full potential. Before returning to his parent club, he scored 11 goals in 48 games and assisted five times.

His subsequent time at Birmingham City, however, did not maintain his trajectory. Injury hampered his stint with the club, and during his few appearances, the club lost three, drew two, and only won one, in which he played 34 minutes.

He then moved to QPR, originally on loan and then permanently, but failed to make an impression in 21 games.

Cambridge United will be looking to rediscover his Doncaster Rovers form rather than his recent movements.
