Former Alabama LB receives coaching job

Nico Johnson is stretching out in his coaching profession.

Johnson, a University of Alabama alumni, was appointed on Friday as defensive ends coach for the Mountain West Conference’s University of Nevada football team. Johnson worked as a graduate assistant with defensive linemen under Steve Sarkisian’s coaching staff at the University of Texas for the past two years (2022-23).

He helped the Longhorns win the Big 12 Championship last season and go to the College Football Playoff. Johnson also helped the Longhorns beat Alabama.

As a linebacker for the Tide, the 33-year-old won three BCS National Championships under Nick Saban.

He played from 2009 to 2012 and won two Southeastern Conference championships.

Johnson, a native of Andalusia, Ala., played for four teams in the National Football League — Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals, Washington Redskins, and New York Giants — during his short career in the pros. He is a very bright defensive mind, and it will be exciting to see what we does with Nevada’s defensive ends.
