For Week 13, the Colts elevate WR and RB from the practice squad to the active roster

In preparation for their matchup with the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts today promoted wide receiver D.J. Montgomery and running back Tyler Goodson from the practice squad to the active roster.

On September 12, 2023, Goodson, who stands 5-9 and weighs 197 pounds, was added to the Colts practice squad. He took part in the training camp and offseason activities for the Green Bay Packers in 2023. Goodson was a member of the Packers’ practice squad and active roster during his rookie season in 2022, although he did not participate in any games. On May 2, 2022, he was first signed by Green Bay as an undrafted free agent.

Collegiately, Goodson played in 34 games (24 starts) at Iowa (2019-21) and compiled 533 carries for 2,551 yards (4.8 avg.) and 18 touchdowns. He also registered 70 receptions for 565 yards (8.1 avg.) and one touchdown. Goodson earned Third Team All-Big Ten honors from the league media (2021), Honorable Mention All-Big Ten recognition from the league coaches (2021), First Team All-Big Ten accolades from the league coaches and media (2020) and First Team All-Big Ten honors from the Associated Press (2020).

This season, Montgomery, who is 6-1 and 201 pounds, has alternated between the team’s active roster and practice squad. Against Tampa Bay in Week 12, he played. Montgomery first signed with the Colts as a free agent on August 18, 2023, and he took part in training camp.

He played for a while with the USFL’s Michigan Panthers before moving to Indianapolis. Following his experience with the Colts during 2022 training camp, Montgomery was a member of the Houston Texans practice squad in the previous season.

In 2021, he was a member of the practice squad and active roster for the New York Jets. Montgomery caught three catches for 36 yards (12.0 avg.) in three games during his participation. He was a member of the Jets practice squad in 2020.

In 2019, Montgomery was placed on the Cleveland Browns’ Injured Reserve for the whole season as a rookie. On May 3, 2019, the Browns signed him as an undrafted free agent.
