Ex Yankees Star Agrees to Deal with…

The New York Yankees are aiming to have a significantly better season in 2024 than they had last year, when they finished second-to-last in the division.

They acquired Juan Soto in a blockbuster transaction and added Marcus Stroman to strengthen their starting rotation while other members of the pitching staff return to health.

This is a pivotal year for the Yankees, and they aim to deliver. New York has been looking for the missing roster element since their last World Series victory in 2009.

After negotiating an under-the-radar transaction with the Toronto Blue Jays to acquire Gio Urshela, it did not appear that this move would help them contend.

However, in 2019, the third baseman had his finest season to date, hitting.314/.355/.534 with 21 home runs and 74 RBI in 132 games. He contributed significantly to the team’s 103-game winning streak and appearance in the American League Championship Series.

The Yankees appeared to have unearthed their future third baseman.

This continued in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, when he posted a career-high OPS+ of 137, but after a dismal year in 2021 in which New York was ousted in the Wild Card round, the front office traded him to the Minnesota Twins.

He had a rebound season with them, hitting.285/.338/.429 with an OPS+ of 119, but he was dealt following the season, this time to the Los Angeles Angels. Unfortunately for the former Yankees great, he shattered his pelvis and will miss the remainder of 2023 after just participating in 62 games.

Urshela was looking for a new team this offseason, and according to Jeff Passan of ESPN, he has found one after signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Detroit Tigers.

According to the insider, he will be given the option to play third base as well as other infield positions. Urshela’s time in New York came to an abrupt end when the front office apparently made a panic move and moved him out of town.
