Ex-Steelers Defensive End Signed By Panthers

The Carolina Panthers announced on Friday that they will sign former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Chris Wormley from their practice squad.

He will play in his fourth game of the season, and he has one tackle so far. Wormley has appeared in the last three games as a member of the team’s rotation.

Wormley has been an unrestricted free agent since his contract with the Steelers expired in March, but he has also been rehabbing from ACL surgery, which terminated his 2022 season with the team.

The dependable defensive lineman also tried out for the New York Giants and the New England Patriots earlier this offseason, but did not sign with either team.

Wormley is hoping for a second chance in the NFL and expects to shine with a struggling Panthers club. He was an effective rotational player for Pittsburgh, but a significant injury disabled him and reduced his free agent worth.

Wormley suffered a non-contact knee injury in the Steelers’ home game against the Baltimore Ravens in December. Wormley’s season was cut short by the injury, which also cost him the majority of the offseason.

Wormley was in the final year of his two-year contract with the Steelers, thus he was eligible for free agency as well, despite the injury. Chris Wormley has 29 tackles, a forced fumble, and 0.5 sacks as a rotational member along the Steelers’ defensive line prior to his injury.

Before his two seasons in Pittsburgh, the 6-foot-5, 300-pound Michigan product spent three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. The veteran will now get to play for the Panthers as he looks to put up quality footage before hitting free agency again.
