Ex Michigan safety confirms his transfer destination

Sabb’s time in the transfer portal was short.

Former Michigan safety Keon Sabb went through the transfer portal on Friday, February 16. Four days later, he has not only decided on a new school, but has already registered.

Sabb will join the Crimson Tide football team this fall, according to a NIL collective from the Rose Bowl runner-up University of Alabama. Sabb later confirmed it on social media.

The 6-foot-1, 208-pound former four-star was a top-100 talent in the 2022 recruiting class for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He initially chose Michigan over Clemson, Georgia, Penn State, and Texas A&M.

Sabb played special teams in four games as a true freshman, allowing him to keep his redshirt. As a redshirt freshman in 2023, he appeared in 14 games and recorded 28 tackles, seven pass breakups, two interceptions, and one interception return for score.

Sabb would have been in line for a bigger role next year, after Mike Sainristil abandoned the nickel position in Michigan’s defense. However, with Rod Moore and Makari Paige both returning to Michigan, snaps at Sabb’s primary position of safety may have been limited. He will presumably take up Caleb Downs’ job after transferring from Alabama to Ohio State earlier this offseason.

While this is undoubtedly a setback to Michigan’s secondary depth, the Wolverines return the aforementioned established starters and will now rely on Zeke Berry, DJ Waller, Ja’Den McBurrows, Jyaire Hill, and Brandyn Hillman, among others, in 2024.
