ESPN predicts that the Michigan football team will have a new starting quarterback in 2024

One of the greatest questions for Michigan football moving into the 2024 season is who will start at quarterback.

There are several candidates. With another year of eligibility, Jack Tuttle is in the mix alongside Jayden Denegal, Alex Orji, Davis Warren, and incoming freshman Jadyn Davis.

I would be astonished if Davis became the starting. He was a top-100 recruit but will most likely benefit from a year of experience, as J.J. McCarthy did. Jayden Denegal and Alex Orji, who both signed as members of the 2022 class, have also seen limited game experience, with Orji serving as a runner in each of the last four games.

Regardless of who starts as quarterback, Alex Orji should be used in the same role. Michigan football coaches have stated that he can throw the ball, so adding a couple play fakes to the QB sweep would be great, and he and Donovan Edwards in the zone read sound like a major nightmare for defenses.

If Orji can effectively toss the ball, he could be the best alternative. The offensive line will be good, as will the backs, and with Orji, the running game may be even more prolific in 2024 than it was in 2023, at least in terms of yards.

Denegal is a stronger thrower than runner, but he made a significant improvement last offseason, and if one of these players is to be Michigan football’s starting quarterback, they must make another significant improvement.

However, ESPN does not believe this will happen. Adam Rittenberg anticipated that the Wolverines will look for a quarterback via the transfer portal, which is conceivable. I am not sure if it is essential, as there is currently no clear upgrade available.
